Black Mould & Condensation Treatment in East Lancashire
Wiping the mould off only for it to come straight back? Condensation is the most common cause of damp we see, and it won't go away on its own. At DampCav we treat the mould, then fix the ventilation problem behind it so it doesn't return. We're a family-run team based in Rishton, covering Blackburn, Darwen, Accrington, Great Harwood and the surrounding towns.
Signs of condensation
- Black mould in corners, around windows and behind furniture
- Water running down windows, especially in the morning
- Mould on window seals, ceilings and the backs of wardrobes
- A musty smell and clothes or shoes going mouldy
- Peeling paint and wallpaper in bathrooms and bedrooms
- Damp patches on cold outside walls
What causes condensation?
Every home produces moisture from cooking, showers, drying clothes and even breathing. When warm, moist air hits a cold surface, it turns back into water. Without enough ventilation that moisture has nowhere to go, and mould grows on the damp surfaces.
It's often worse in homes with new double glazing, blocked vents, no working extractor fans, or rooms that are heated unevenly. It isn't about how clean you keep your home.
How we treat mould and condensation
- Survey. We inspect the property, take readings and check it's really condensation, not rising or penetrating damp.
- Clear quote. You get a written quote for only the work that's needed, with no pressure and no upselling.
- Treat the mould. We clean and treat the affected areas with a fungicidal wash.
- Fix the ventilation. We install the right system for your home, such as a heated Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) unit, kitchen and bathroom extractor fans, or passive vents.
- Make good. We repair and redecorate affected areas where needed, using anti-mould products.
- Aftercare. We explain how the system works and give you simple tips to keep moisture down.
We only fit heated PIV units, to avoid the cold draughts some cheaper systems cause. Our ventilation systems are reliable, UK-manufactured and come with long-term warranties. See our ventilation services.
Landlords and housing providers
Mould and condensation are a big part of keeping a rental home safe and healthy. We regularly work for landlords, letting agents and housing providers, carrying out surveys, treating mould and fitting heated PIV systems in tenanted properties. Our heated PIV units are popular in rentals because they work automatically and include added security features.

Mould and condensation FAQs
Is black mould dangerous?
Mould can trigger or worsen asthma, allergies and breathing problems, especially for children, older people and anyone with a health condition. It's worth dealing with properly rather than just wiping it off.
Will opening windows fix it?
It helps, but it's rarely enough on its own in a Lancashire winter. A properly fitted ventilation system keeps air moving all the time without losing much heat.
What is a PIV unit?
Positive Input Ventilation is a unit, usually fitted in the loft or a cupboard, that gently brings in fresh, filtered air. This pushes out the damp air and helps stop condensation forming. Ours are heated, so the incoming air isn't cold.
Does a PIV unit cost much to run?
Running costs are low, typically pennies a day. The heater only kicks in when the incoming air is cold.
I'm a tenant. Can you help?
We usually work with the landlord or letting agent, as they're responsible for the property. Ask them to contact us and we'll arrange a survey.
